# KeylessFile > Free online tool to remove Excel sheet and workbook protection without password. ## What it does KeylessFile removes protection from Excel files (.xlsx, .xls, .xlsm) when you forgot the password. Files are processed securely and deleted immediately after use. ## What it can remove - Sheet protection (locked cells that prevent editing) - Workbook protection (protected structure that prevents adding/deleting/hiding sheets) ## What it cannot remove - File encryption (password required to open the file) - If Excel asks for a password before showing any content, that's encryption — not protection. KeylessFile cannot help with encrypted files. ## How it works Excel files (.xlsx) are ZIP archives containing XML files. Sheet and workbook protection is just a configuration tag in the XML — not real encryption. KeylessFile removes these tags, allowing you to edit the file again. ## Technical details - Supported formats: .xlsx, .xls, .xlsm - Maximum file size: 5MB - Processing: Secure server-side, in-memory only (nothing written to disk) - No account or registration required ## Languages - English: https://keylessfile.com/en - Spanish: https://keylessfile.com/es ## Contact hello@keylessfile.com ## Links - Home: https://keylessfile.com - How to unprotect Excel: https://keylessfile.com/en/how-to-unprotect-excel - Sheet protection explained: https://keylessfile.com/en/excel-sheet-protection - Workbook protection explained: https://keylessfile.com/en/excel-workbook-protection - Protection vs Encryption: https://keylessfile.com/en/excel-protection-vs-encryption
