How to Unlock Specific Cells in Excel (Keep Sheet Protected)

Unlocking specific cells lets you combine control and flexibility: users edit what they need while formulas and layout remain safe.

Quick steps

  1. Select the cells to be editable.
  2. Right‑click → Format Cells → Protection → Uncheck “Locked”.
  3. Review → Protect Sheet → Configure allowed actions (selection, sorting, etc.).
  4. Confirm and test editing on those cells.

Permissioned exceptions

Use “Allow Users to Edit Ranges” to define per‑user/group exceptions (domain environments).

Checks

  • Ensure critical cells remain locked.
  • Make input ranges obvious (color, data validation).
  • For external sharing, consider open‑password encryption.

Remove the lock

Review → Unprotect Sheet. Validate formulas and formats afterwards.
